THE REAL (ESTATE) STORY By Larry Underhill By Lary Underh FIFTY YEARS AGO, in a dingy mental ward at County Hospital in Martinez, California, pastor Al Tomlin introduced me to Jesus Christ. That mo- ment changed the trajectory of my life, although my life remained "messy" for some time to come. OCCASIONALLY I hear people tell me, "You deserve" this or that. I tell them, "If I got what I really deserve, I'd have been in hell decades ago." God, in His amazing grace, has given me a great life. And most importantly, the expectation of a continued great life with Him forever. "IN HIS HAND is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind." (Job 12:10). THANKS, MISTER LINCOLN! In 1863, as the Civil War raged on, our country's President issued Proc- lamation 118: "Now, therefore, I, Abraham Lin- coln, President of the United States, do hereby ap- point and set apart the last Thursday in November next as a day which I desire to be observed by all my fellow-citizens, wherever they may then be, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the Universe. And I do further recommend to my fellow-citizens aforesaid that on that occasion they do reverently humble themselves in the dust and from thence of- fer up penitent and fervent prayers and supplica- tions to the Great Disposer of Events for a return of the inestimable blessings of peace, union, and harmony throughout the land which it has pleased Him to assign as a dwelling place for ourselves and for our posterity throughout all generations." "Reverently humble themselves." Not something you see a lot of these days. As C.S. Lewis said, "Human history is the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy." "COME TO ME, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Jesus). I can attest to the truth of His invitation. I have a LOT to be thankful for! How about you? Enjoy your Thanksgiving Weekend! See you next Sat.
